01

Speak early.

Prompt reporting can help BMC identify, contain and address wrongdoing before it causes greater harm.

02

Good faith matters.

You do not need to prove the case yourself. Share what you reasonably believe is true and provide the facts you have.

03

Retaliation is not acceptable.

BMC policy protects whistleblowers from retaliation and requires reports to be handled seriously and objectively.

Your protection matters.

BMC's policy requires whistleblowing reports to be handled with seriousness, confidentiality and objectivity, and protects non-malicious whistleblowers against retaliation.

  • Protection from retaliation
BMC is obliged to protect non-malicious whistleblowers from retaliatory action by BMC employees.
  • Anonymous reports are accepted
Anonymous reports are assessed under the policy and handled with the same seriousness, confidentiality and objectivity.
  • Confidential handling
BMC will not disclose whistleblower information or identity except where disclosure to judicial or investigating authorities is required.
  • Good-faith reporting
A report that is not proven does not by itself make the reporter responsible. Knowingly malicious allegations intended to harm others are different and may have consequences.
What happens next

A clear path starting from report receipt through assessment, investigation and appropriate action.

BMC's policy requires objective handling, initial evaluation and timely investigation according to the nature, complexity and severity of the case.

1

Report received

Compliance reviews the report and identifies missing information or supporting evidence.

2

Receipt acknowledged

Receipt of a SpeakUP report will be acknowledged to the whistleblower within 3 working days.

3

Initial assessment

An initial evaluation determines whether investigation is required and the appropriate route.

4

Verification & investigation

Where justified, the matter is investigated objectively and recommendations are developed.

5

Decision & follow-up

Appropriate corrective or disciplinary measures are determined, implemented and followed up as applicable.

Why you may not receive every detail

To protect confidentiality, privacy and the integrity of investigations, BMC may be unable to disclose specific disciplinary measures, personal information or every action taken after a report.

Share facts as clearly as you can. You can report anonymously.

Helpful information

A strong report usually explains:

  • What happened or may be happening.
  • Who is involved or may know about it.
  • When and where it occurred.
  • How you became aware of it.
  • Any documents, messages, records or witnesses that may help.
  • Whether the issue is ongoing or there is a risk of retaliation.

Privacy tip: only provide information relevant to the concern. Do not submit passwords, unrelated medical information or unnecessary personal data.

Clarifications

Questions people often have before speaking up.

Clear expectations reduce uncertainty and make it easier to report responsibly.

Can I report anonymously?
Yes. BMC policy accepts anonymous whistleblowing reports and requires them to be handled with the same seriousness, confidentiality and objectivity. However, anonymity can limit BMC's ability to ask follow-up questions or provide direct protective measures.
What if my concern turns out to be wrong?
A good-faith report is different from a malicious allegation. Report what you reasonably believe to be true and describe the basis for your concern. A report that cannot be proven does not by itself mean the reporter acted improperly.
Will my identity be disclosed?
BMC policy restricts disclosure of whistleblower information or identity, except to judicial or investigating authorities where required. Information should be shared on a need-to-know basis for handling the matter.
When will I hear back?
Receipt of a SpeakUP report will be acknowledged to the whistleblower within 3 working days. The time needed to verify or investigate a case will depend on its complexity, severity and nature.
Will I be told what disciplinary action was taken?
Not necessarily. Privacy, confidentiality and investigation integrity may prevent BMC from sharing disciplinary measures or detailed outcomes relating to other people.
Who can use SpeakUP?
The policy applies broadly to BMC personnel, executives and Board members; contractors, vendors, consultants and service providers; former employees and job applicants; and BMC entities. Stakeholders with a genuine concern may contact Compliance.
Should I investigate or collect more evidence first?
No. Do not conduct your own investigation or access information you are not authorized to access. Report the facts and supporting material you already have lawfully available.
What is not a SpeakUP matter?
Routine service requests, ordinary academic inquiries, general feedback or normal HR issues should normally go to the relevant BMC function. Use SpeakUP where the issue involves suspected misconduct, illegality, concealment, corruption, retaliation or another serious ethical concern.
