SDGs contribute assessing the capabilities of countries and institutions of realizing its objectives. Of these indicators, good health, and well-being in addition to the proper health care for all society members as well as controlling the endemic and epidemic diseases caused by environmental pollution.

Saudi Arabia’s health Sector is undergoing rapid transformation through programs in line with the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 to ensure continued development of healthcare services in the Kingdom and focus efforts in this vital sector. This is following the National Transformation Program’s achievement of accomplishments and strategic targets that upgraded the health sector to face challenges related to health services by increasing their quality and efficiency, and the levels of protection against health risks.

There were a total of 104,775 medical physicians and dentists in the country as of 2018. That same year there were 184,565 nurses, or 5.5 nurses per 1000 population, whereas the ratio for doctors around 2.8 per 1000 population. This places the country’s doctor-to-patient ratio in line with the GCC average and on a par with other countries such as the US (2.6) and the UK (2.9). Yet, according to estimates, the country will need an additional 30,000 doctors by 2030 to meet rising demand.

BMC Commitment to Good Health and Well-Being

BMC is committed contributing to good health and well-being which is obviously reflected on many areas. BMC is keen to support health services in the Kingdom by developing superior scientific research and launching research initiatives in the health sector. Corresponding to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030, BMC developed various research themes based on the most common health problems in the community. BMC in collaboration with local and national, or global health institutions and organizations to improve health and well-being outcomes. BMC has many fruitful collaborations with local, regional, and international institutions, authorities, and organizations resulted in executive collaborations with regional and international health schools in addressing health problems facing our populations which reflected in more than 400 high-quality publications with international coauthors from more than 30 international institutions.

Graduates in Health Professions

BMC committed to teach and provide its graduates with the necessary and efficient skills and refining their talents which will increase their competencies and competitiveness through 9 medical programs in different medical specialties including Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing and Healthcare Administration, as well as Respiratory, Occupational, and Physical Therapy. BMC is one of the leading private medical colleges in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia as it has the first Occupational Therapy in the Saudi private sector higher education. The BMC class 2022 had 385 graduates in health professions from different medical programs representing 100% of BMC graduates.

Collaborations with Health Institutions

BMC has wide range of successful collaborations with local, national, and international health institutions, hospitals and medical centers through MOUs, agreements, and contracts. The activities and initiatives of these collaborations involve students training and internships, Continuous Medical Education Programs for health institution’s staff and joint research projects as well as sharing of BMC medical capacities. BMC has a collaboration with many international partners as Maastricht University to collaborate in the development of a competency based and contemporary MBBS program and Harvard Medical School in collaborative accredited medical courses. In addition, BMC has wide range of international collaborations with institutions, organizations, international companies as AMBOSS GmbH to enhance the standards of teaching and learning as well as promote its graduate competencies. BMC in collaboration with American Heart Association introduce Basic Life Support (BLS) course to increase basic cardiovascular life support skills in various infacility and pre-hospital settings. Another fruitful partnership between BMC and world-class health organizations as BMC hosting the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists membership exams in which 128 medical practitioners had performed the first and second part of this prestigious exams. On the national and local levels, BMC in collaboration with Saudi Commission for Health Specialties (SCFHS), provide BMC Dentistry Clinical Attachment Program to qualify graduates to be attached to a resident in certain specialty to gain clinical experience by observing and shadowing the resident under the supervision of a consultant at highly specialized setting. Moreover, BMC fosters skills development of health care practitioners through well-crafted and well-designed development diploma programs aligned with recent advances in medical educations and professional development. The diplomas offered by BMC include health security, dental assistant, and nursing care technician. These programs contribute meeting the needs of the Saudi labor market for qualified health cadres, and reducing unemployment rates among university graduates, as well as expanding health services. Another promising partnership is the starting of collaborative project between BMC and King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (KAUST) to develop artificial intelligent unit in medicine and medical sciences. This unique unit will benefit young researchers in different specialties, supporting innovate ideas and link the medical trials with high-tech as well as artificial intelligence.

Health Outreach Programs

About 200 BMC’s consultants, clinicians, and medical specialists in addition to 2000 students are engaged in services to the local community to improve health and well-being through different strategies, volunteering, outreach programs, and awareness campaigns that provided, in collaboration with community societies, nongovernmental, public, and non-profit organizations, to a wide range of community sectors. These campaigns are organized and run in a scientifically designed planand on regular base to cover different health challenges issues such as obesity, diabetes, breast cancer, smoking, woman and child health, hypertension, and drug abuse. Moreover, through volunteering campaigns, BMC staff and students shared in Hajj and Omrah seasons to serve pilgrims and provide different kind of medical and consultation supports. Furthermore, through its 8 fully equipped specializedDental Clinics, BMC provide high standard and full dental health care for the community. These services offer an invaluable community resource that provides dental care for patients in the public community. This clinical support for public community fosters the value of social responsibility while promoting students’ clinical and practical skills to succeed as future healthcare providers. The mission of the BMC’s Dental Clinic Health Services is to cultivate the value of community service, provide free dental health services that support the public community and the health of its members, and promote health awareness of dental health issues. BMC’s Dental Clinics and Medical Sciences has provided dental examinations and services to 5909 patients during the academic year of 2020/2021. Serving this number of patients help to maintain good health through the dental treatment provided under the supervision of the highly trained and skilled consultants is a part of BMC contribution with the community in alignment with Saudi vision 2030.

Shared Sports Facilities

The indoor and outdoor playgrounds and other sports facilities at BMC are available for local club teams and public schools. Also, BMC hosts and provides various sports activities through its different sport clubs and organizes competitions in different sport games between school teams. In addition, BMC’s student clubs participate with other school’s students in different sports campaigns like walking, biking, and horse riding.

Access to Sexual and Reproductive Health-care Services

BMC offers sexual and reproductive health care services for its students including information, guidance, and education services. Through its experienced consultant gynecologists, BMC introduce regular support, consultations and checkup as well as organizes regular awareness events in campus for students on many occasions as World AIDS Day under the slogan, "Have a Check-up and a Consultation, and Feel Reassured" in cooperation with Ministry of Health represented by Directorate of Health Affairs in the Makkah Region and the Department of Communicable Disease Control. Such events target all students and staff at BMC to raise health awareness about AIDS, pregnancy, breast feeding, women health etc. These highlighted the role played by educative campaigns in increasing the awareness about infectious and common diseases among the BMC community. As its continuous keenness supporting the community in different aspects, BMC hosts and launches awareness campaigns, on a regular base, for "healthy marriage and pre-marriage check-up" in collaboration with social societies in Jeddah. The healthy marriage possesses a compatibility and harmony between both spouses resulting in healthy families as well as healthy children in all aspects including psychological, mental, physical, and social conduct.

Mental Health Support

BMC has a major interest regarding to the health of its students, faculty, and staff through wide range of policies, services, and activities particularly mental health support which has substantial care by allocating a psychological clinic to receive psychological and mental consultation requests, through multiple communication channels, which are directed by highly qualified consultants and counseling psychologists. The clinic provided consultation services through many topics that fostering mental health as self-esteem, anxiety, exam anxiety and methods of coping with it, positive and negative thinking. BMC hosts workshop on “how to achieve mental, psychological and behavioral stability”. BMC has a characteristic counseling supporting services, it provides a professional and confidential setting for the psychological, social, and developmental support of all BMC students as they pursue their academic goals and explore personal growth. BMC Counseling Unit aims to provide students with alternative ways of looking at their issues and make choices toward a healthy fulfilling life- both personally and academically. The counseling sessions cover dealing with stress and/or anxiety, managing relationships, and overcoming adjustment issues through wide range of counseling and therapy sessions as individual and group therapies, fitness classes: Zumba and Yoga, meditation, animal assisted therapy and music therapy for harmony. On the other hand, BMC contributed to the promotion of mental health for individuals and broader community in collaboration with community societies, nongovernmental, public, and non-profit organizations. BMC organized community service campaigns in cooperation with “Waad Therapy Center” for psychological consolation to raise awareness of mental health diseases. The campaigns were sponsored by BMC in coordination with the “World Mental Health Day”. The main purpose of the campaign was to raise awareness of mental health diseases. To attain the purpose of the campaign, BMC staff members, along with 31 BMC students, representing different academic majors, provided the public with essential background information that describes the symptoms of different diseases and promotes the importance of developing conscious awareness to recognize the need to ask for medical intervention as needed. BMC staff and student-volunteers explained to the public prevalent mental health diseases, such as anxiety, stress, obsessive compulsive disorder, and social media addiction. The public showed immense interest in learning about maintaining mental health. The campaign attained its purpose in promoting awareness of mental health and reducing the social stigma surrounding mental health diseases.

Smoke-free Policy

BMC has significant initiatives for “smoke-free” policy which make BMC, a smoke-free campus. Since 2019, BMC established a smoking cessation clinic in the campus in collaboration with Ministry of Health. The clinic offers medicines to help quit smoking and a data entry system for those who want to quit smoking (Tobacco Control Management System). BMC smoking cessation clinic in partnership with Ministry of Health guide the students and spread the awareness among them about the dangers of smoking throughout outreach programs, meetings, campaigns, and guidance in e-clubs, to help students getting rid of smoking and offer the necessary guidance. BMC had run many No-Smoking and Anti-Drug campaigns in many community sectors (high schools, shopping malls, etc.) to give awareness about the harmful effects of smoking and drugs their negative impact on human health and the surrounding environment.
